Glorious Day on Three Amigos

Joy at the helm watching the wind direction

We had a wonderful afternoon sail Sunday, May 8.  The winds were pretty light, but it was fun and relaxing just being out on the water.  Rick and Pat were helping us learn the "ropes" on our beloved Three Amigos.  Learning to sail is a challenge, but so much fun.  After Rick leaves in a couple of weeks we will be on our own.  At least there won't be any huge seas on the reservoir for us to contend with.  After we get some experience here and feel more comfortable with our abilities, we will be headed for more intersting waters.

My helmsmanship can't be that bad!

Our Sailboat

I have dreamed of owning a sailboat since I was in high school, perhaps earlier.  Finally after many years at almost 60 years of age, I now own one.  My wife and I own a Southcoast 22 sailboat built in the early 1970s.

I first saw Three Amigos in September 2010 when I was driving around Hoover Reservoir not far from Westerville and New Albany Ohio one Sunday afternoon.  I decided to check out the boats at the docks near the dam and I saw a man on a sailboat.  I love yo look at sailboats so I entered into a conversation with him.  His name was Rick and he was closing her up after an afternoon sail.  I told Rick how much I admired sailboats and he invited me aboard.  I told him of my dream of owning a sailboat and it just happened that this boat was for sale.  One thing lead to another and now my with and I are owners of the boat the S/V Three Amigos.

Three Amigos is a Southcoast 22 foot sailboat. built in the early 1970s.  She has a swing keel and is reportedly a very seaworthy little boat.  Rick was graciously offered to teach us to sail her.  Thanks, Rick!

Sunday May 1, 2011 after being in storage all winter, Rick, Pat (his sailing partner) and my wife and I got Three Amigos ready to sail for the summer.  Rick and Pat taught us how to step the mast and rig our boat.  With their help, we got her launched and docked at her summer slip at Hoover.  The photo above was taken by me using my cell phone will motoring from the boat ramp to her slip.

We are happy to own our dream boat and we will be posting our adventures as they unfold.

Blessings!

Ron
